Mercedes Maybach into luxury car segment

The luxury car segment is all set to get a boost with the re-launch of the Maybach by German auto giant Mercedes-Benz, says The Wall Street Journal. The car maker has priced the premium sedan at Rs 5.10 crore (ex-showroom Delhi).

The Maybach, which was earlier introduced in India to cater to the super rich in 2004 at a price tag of about Rs 5 crore, failed to attract wealthy Indian customers. WSJ also reported that the Maybach would now come in two variants - 57S and 62, both of which will be gasoline-powered engines.
The newly-appointed managing director and chief executive of Mercedes Benz India Peter Honegg was quoted in the WSJ as saying, "These, along with Mercedes-Benz models, made some of the finest examples of automotive excellence, worldwide."

On the highway, the E-Class glides softly. It is not so soft that the car feels disconnected from the road — quite the opposite — but rather as if it were riding on perfectly smooth pavement. It was impressively smooth on a bumpy gravel road, which is quite a testament to the shock absorbers that use an internal bypass to soften the ride on normal roads but firm up at higher speeds on twisty roads.

Mercedes-Benz is in the midst of a product renaissance. The CLS started the ball rolling, while the revamped C-Class, SL, new GLK and SLS AMG have kept the world buzzing. However, the new E-Class is the one that matters the most.

Available as a coupe, convertible or sedan, the E hits the broadest point in the company’s line-up. And while the four-door E350 and E63 AMG offer either great value or massive performance at either end of the spectrum, it’s the E550 that tries to balance those two attributes.

FAITHFUL 5.5L V8 DELIVERS THE GOODS

As expected, the E550 differentiates itself by its engine: in this case, a 5.5-liter V8 that produces 382 hp at 6000 rpm and 391 ft-lbs of torque from 2800 to 4800 rpm. It’s still reasonably competitive compared to its rivals and the standard seven-speed automatic transmission allows for a quick 0-60 mph sprint of just 5.2 seconds. The sound doesn’t have the sharp, muscle car roar of the AMG cars, but it is throaty enough.

Fuel efficiency isn’t bad either, with 16/24-mpg (city/highway) being above average in the class. Because of some creative construction techniques, curb weight is relatively svelte at 4,034 lb.

In the first five months of the year, 1,913 new Mercedes cars were registered, making it the most popular after Toyota, which still holds a comfortable lead with 3,958 cars sold.

The German brand has traditionally taken fifth or sixth spot in the sales tally.

Victory for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG over some strong competition. In the “Sportiest cars of 2010” readers’ poll organised by the renowned car magazine sport auto, the gullwing model took the title in the “super sports” section.

The very best series-production and performance-tuned vehicles compete against each other on an annual basis in the sport auto readers’ poll; taking part this year were 260 vehicles in 25 categories.

Attracting no less than 17.2 percent of the votes cast, the SLS AMG left all the other super sports cars trailing in its wake. With over 13 competitors from Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, the USA, Sweden and France – the win underlines just how popular the SLS AMG is amongst the readers.

A total of 10,000 readers cast their vote. Not only did the super sports car from Mercedes-Benz win over the judges’ hearts – it was also victorious when put to the test.

The AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine with dry sump lubrication and 420 kW (571 hp) plus a torque of 650 newton metres, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a transaxle configuration – not to mention its athletic double-wishbone sports suspension – add up to a unique high-tech blend, ensuring driving dynamics of the highest calibre.

Living down under and craving for a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG? Well, guess what? Mercedes-Benz recently revealed how much it would take for an Aussie to own an SLS. Starting at around $464,000, more than 40 SLS vehicles have been paid for, in Australia, and are set to be delivered this August.

Mercedes-Benz Australia Managing Director Horst von Sanden gave out the scoop on the current demand for the SLS in the country, which was far greater than expected. Even while they’re still waiting for the units to arrive and with months to go before deliveries go underway, orders are already piling up fast.

With reservations and payouts flooding in, Sanden fears they may run out of SLS units and not be able to keep up with the year’s demand.

It’s no wonder why the Aussies are so into the SLS. It’s one of the lightest supercars ever to grace the market, and with a racing heritage that it earned from its ancestor, the 300SL Gullwing, it’s a must-have for Mercedes-Benz collectors everywhere.

We all know that the Mercedes SLS AMG is a truly delicious sports car, but what some of us may not know is that there is an even more delectable version in the works. This sinfully delicious version will go into limited production in 2013 and will cost at least 50% more than a standard model.

What’s so yummy about this model? The new Black Series from Mercedes will feature the 6.2-liter V8 engine, but revised to deliver up to 600 hp and 500lb ft of torque done with a few special ingredients such as a larger air manifold, higher compression ratio, reprofiled camshafts, and other unspecified tweaks. Weight’s not going to be an issue with this dessert. The total weight of the Mercedes SLS AMG will be reduced by 50 kilos in the Black Series, so we can expect a sprint from 0 to 60 mph made in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 208 mph. Satisfied yet?

Think you’ve seen everything? Well, not yet. You haven’t seen what Binz has been up to. The company got the green light from Mercedes-Benz to build a limo version of the ever-reliable E-Class, and they wasted no time in doing just that.

The outstretched E-Class gains 1.11 meters from its standard length. It gets two additional doors plus an additional row of seats, pegging its loading capacity at seven passengers, excluding the driver. Customers are given the option to turn the 2nd row aft, facing the 3rd row in traditional limo style, or simply get rid of it for a really individualized setup and lots of space. A leather-clad wall is available at the touch of a button to separate the driver from the passenger cabin portions.

Of course, with the longer wheelbase comes a strengthened chassis to increase torsional rigidity. You’ll also have the option to add armoring hardware in case you lead a very dangerous, high-profile life.

Powering the E-Class limo is a choice between the 350 CGI BlueEfficiency, the E500 and the E250 BlueEfficiency. The engine will be electronically limited, meaning the driver won’t be hooning around town while you’re in the office. Available now in Germany.

The SUV’s from the Mercedes stable has received an overwhelming response. In Jan-April 2010 the company sold a total of 92 units of GL-Class and M-Class. In contast there were 55 units sold during the same period in 2009.

Latest internet rumors report that Mercedes will unveil a GT3 version for their newly launched SLS AMG supercar in April at the New York Auto Show.

While there are no official details on the car's specifications, it is rumored that the 6,2 liter V8 engine will be tuned to deliver a minimum 600 hp.

The SLS AMG GT3 will feature a rear wing for more down force, it will loose approx 300 kilos from its total weight, while the interior will be stripped of all luxury such as air conditioning, navigation and upholstery.

When the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz flagship S-Class sedan is released in 2012, it will be available exclusively with a hybrid powertrain. According to a source contacted by Autoblog, the 2012 S-Class will be hybrid only, except for any model built by the company’s high-performance AMG division.

The only hybrid S-Class currently sold is the S400 hybrid, which is the lowest priced model in the S-Class line. The S400 hybrid starts at $87,950. The current S-Class hybrid gets 26-mpg on the highway and has 295-hp with its V6 engine and mild hybrid assist system.

Autoblog’s source also claims that the current S-Class hybrid is selling well in America right now, particularly in Hollywood. Apparently many of the celebrities who bought Prius hybrids as statements of their dedication to environmentalism are getting rid of them amid the unintended acceleration reports. Many of those affluent entertainers are buying S-Class hyrbids to replace their Toyotas.

136-horsepower Mercedes-Benz? What if it were powered by hydrogen fuel cells? Are you so committed to green-car technology that, besides the six-figure price tag, you would put up with zero-to-60 mile-per-hour times of more than 11 seconds?

Well, that is sort of the value proposition behind the Mercedes F 800 Style “research vehicle” that the German automaker is planning to unveil at the Geneva auto show, which opens to the news media on March 2.

Because the F 800 is a concept car — and 13th in a line of what Mercedes calls “research vehicles,” introduced since 1981 — it is likely to change by the time anything remotely like it makes its way to production, which would be at least three years from now.

The all new E-Class Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, which goes on sale in May 2010, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling. Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition – with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette.

In keeping with the motto “four seasons, four personalities”, all-year-round suitability was right at the top of the developers’ list of priorities. With the new E-Class Cabriolet, the cabriolet season lasts the whole year because, while many cabriolets tend to disappear from the roads in the Fall, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet (length/width/height: 185.0/70.3/55.2in.) provides driving pleasure and comfort whether the roof is open or closed.

New features include:
– The AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop: always on board and easily controllable at the push of a button, it reduces turbulence substantially for all four seat occupants
- The modified AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system
- The sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds – even when driving at speeds of up to 25mph. The cabriolet roof is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the trunk area; it must be closed in order to close the soft top. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the trunk capacity is increased by 3.17 cu. ft. to 13.8 cu. ft. A through-loading feature is included as standard for the new Cabriolet, as is EASY-ENTRY – a manually operated entry and exit aid for the rear passengers.

The power plants for the new E-Class Cabriolet are equally innovative: the engines combine efficiency with effortlessly superior power delivery. The exemplary, low fuel consumption has been achieved because of a number of practical measures. These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tires with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle’s electrical power requirements, plus the crucial factor of outstanding aerodynamics. The Cabriolet’s cd figure of 0.28 is the best in its class, marking a continuation of the E-Class success story in the field of aerodynamics.

Less turbulence, easier to use: AIRCAP® is a world-first

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced a world premiere in the shape of a draught-stop for the SL model series, followed in 2004 by the AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system to further enhance comfort in open-top models. Now comes another world-first: the AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop, which can be activated at the push of a button, greatly reduces turbulence in the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, creating a sea of warm air. It is also much easier to implement and use than conventional draft-stops: there is no tricky installation, the two individual rear seats remain free and the Cabriolet’s flowing side lines remain uninterrupted. AIRCAP® is therefore a classic Mercedes innovation: functional, comfort-enhancing, elegant and safe.

AIRCAP® consists of two components: a wind deflector that can be extended by around 2.4 inches with a net in the windscreen frame and a draft-stop
between the rear seats.

The functions of the two components:
– Elevation of the free flow above the interior
- Net at the front increases the basic pressure in the interior
- Draft-stop at the rear reduces the backflow

As well as enhancing occupant comfort and wellbeing, the reduction in draft when AIRCAP® is activated (it can be activated at speeds of up to 100 mph and remains in use right up to the car’s top speed) reduces the interior noise level – so passengers in all seats find it far easier to communicate.

When the standard AIRCAP® is combined with the optional AIRSCARF®, the system functions like an invisible scarf warming the occupants’ head and neck areas. AIRSCARF® is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

Mercedes engineers have modified this unique innovation specifically for the E-Class Cabriolet: in this model, an adjustment wheel pivots the outlet nozzle upwards and downwards by a total of 36 degrees over and above the head restraint height adjustment, meaning that the driver and front passenger can enjoy the unique neck-level heating regardless of how short or tall they are.

Quiet, warm and windproof: sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

Thanks to its sound-dampening soft top, fitted as standard, even the closed E-Class Cabriolet has one of the quietest interiors in the segment for four-seater premium cabriolets with a fabric roof. The soft top’s exceptionally high-quality insulation brings about a clearly noticeable reduction in the interior noise level compared to conventional fabric soft tops. Exterior noise caused by other vehicles and wind noise are therefore absorbed more effectively.

On the road, the difference is audible from speeds of just 50 mph, for example when driving through a tunnel or overtaking a convoy of trucks. At higher speeds, the benefits of the acoustic soft top are even more tangible. For instance, it is possible to have a perfectly normal phone conversation in hands-free mode even when travelling at a speed more than 125 mph.

The soft top is of course waterproof and windproof. Plus it can be put through an automatic carwash without any hesitation. With a total thickness of .9 inches, the fabric soft top offers excellent thermal insulation, meaning that the E-Class Cabriolet is also ideal for use in winter.

Safety: robust structure, anticipatory protection and windowbags

The new Cabriolet offers the wealth of safety innovations one would expect from a Mercedes-Benz model. Highlights of the open-top two-door model include roll-over protection, the A-pillars reinforced by two additional tubes and the plug-in B-pillars. This new model is also the first Mercedes cabriolet to feature headbags.

The roll-over protection consists of two robust bars, each with a diameter of 1.4 inches, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests. A tilting cone sensor detects imminent danger to the occupants based on extreme skidding movements or acceleration caused by impact. If this sensor then sends a corresponding signal, pre-tensioned pressure springs are activated by pyrotechnic means, i.e. extremely quickly.

Consequently, both roll-over bars in the rear head restraints are extended. They reach their highest point and are locked automatically within a fraction of a second. In combination with the robust A-pillars, each of which is reinforced with two high-strength steel tubes, the steel bars provide highly effective roll-over
protection.

The plug-in B-pillars are extremely robustly connected as they engage in the side skirts, thus offering highly effective protection in the event of a crash. A shoe made from ultra-high-strength steel braces the inside of the B-pillar against the rear seat crossmember.

With seven airbags fitted as standard, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats, not to mention crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger, the new E-Class Cabriolet offers the most extensive safety equipment package in this vehicle category. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front airbags and sidebags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver’s side, and headbags. Mercedes, as ever, has an answer. It’s called AIRCAP, and it’s being introduced on its new E-Class cabriolet.

It’s been in development for years, Mercedes-Benz’s aerodynamics people having looked at possible solutions since the 1980s. Back then, the results looked more like wings from an experimental F1 car, but it seems that, with the new E-Class cabriolet, Mercedes’ aero boffins have come up with a workable solution.

AIRCAP works by raising a small spoiler at the top of the windscreen, in conjunction with raising rear headrests between which a tiny net nestles.

Mercedes Bringing Small Car to U.S. in 2012

Mercedes will introduce at least one small car to the U.S. in 2012, doing a 180 on a past decision to stick to larger vehicles in order to enforce the brand's high-end image. The news comes directly from CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche, in an interview in the Wall Street Journal. The car would compete with vehicles like the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3, Volvo C30 and MINI Cooper – as well as a possible compact luxury vehicle from Lexus based on the LF-Ch concept.

Analysts have suggested the move is the result of lessons learned from the recent economic downturn, with sales of larger luxury vehicles and SUVs taking a significant hit, while the share of the market made up by compact and subcompact vehicles has grown. The introduction of a smaller and more fuel efficient model in the Mercedes lineup in the U.S. would also help the manufacturer meet increasingly strict CAFE regulations.

In the past Mercedes had decided to introduce the B-Class to the U.S. market but canceled plans when an unfavorable Euro-to-dollar exchange rate made the car's business plan unsound. (The B-Class was, however, introduced in Canada, where vehicles are sold for significantly more).

2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 Coupe Review

There's only one thing the Mercedes E350 is missing – about 100-hp. We hate to start off on a bad note with this car, but the base 3.5-liter V6 makes just 268-hp and an equally mediocre 258 ft-lbs of torque. It's not a bad amount of output, but hardly what you might expect from a Mercedes and definitely less than you should get for your $48,925.

Now anyone from Mercedes would tell you the E-Class Coupe isn't about raw horsepower or 0-60 mph times – the E350 Coupe taking around 6.5 seconds to get up to speed. And to a certain extend, they'd be right. Which is convenient, if you happen to be selling a car like this.

The decision to drop the immensely successful CLK from the Mercedes lineup seemed like foolishness, until the E-Class Coupe was announced. Set to take the CLK's place in Merc's lineup, this new car is still very much its successor, even riding on the C-Class's smaller and lighter platform.

The E-Class name, however, is important to Mercedes, as it allows them to do so much more with the car – for the company and for the consumer. With the sport coupe market growing in horsepower and size, many of those vehicles (BMW 3 Series, we're looking at you) have started to encroach on the old CLK's territory.

Below 300 Class

220. [1970s]. A few rare 220 gasoline models were made. I owned one, and it performed surprisingly well for its 4-cylinder engine on a heavy body. Acceleration from 0-20 a weak spot; acceleration from 50-80 amazingly strong.

220D [1970s]. The diesel version of the 220. Craig Tiano, who owned one, calls it "very slow, dangerously so."

190E. [1982-1994]. Mercedes' first real stab at an entry-level car. This car introduced the new multi-link suspension, which eventually spread to all models. 4-cylinder (2.3) cars were criticised for sluggishness. There are several loyal 190-series owners on the list; however, I think most of them drive the 6-cyl 2.6. Unfortunately, the 2.6 is quite rare in my experience, but becomes common after 199? when the 2.3 was discontinued.

190D. [198?-1994]. Diesel model of the new entry level Mercedes. The non-turbocharged diesel model was criticised for sluggishness above and beyond the call of duty.

C220, C280 [1995-2000]. This was an overwhelming improvement over the older 190s. Performance of the 4-cylinder models, as always, is a weak point. Many list members have pointed out a problem with oil leaks which should be looked after. Hans A Strom feels that they've built this car down to a price, and he wouldn't trade his 190E 2.6 sedan for one. Automotive magazines disagree, liking the new, higher tech design. But the "essence" of a Mercedes may have been compromised.

C240, C320 [2001-]. Yet another overwhelming improvement, the new C class is designed to significantly resemble the new S-class in appearance. It succeeds; the C looks like a 3/4 miniature S, albiet a shade short. You can recognize it immediately by the headlights - the dual lights, split on the eariler models, are now merged.

300 Class

240D. [1974-1983] Mercedes' base vehicle for ages. If you want good acceleration, check out the 300D. This has the same body style as the 300D from the same era, so I'm including it here. Occasionally found with manual transmission, a relative rarity.

300D, 300D TurboDiesel. [?-1985] Mercedes' mid-line vehicle. The TurboDiesel gives a significant gain in acceleration over the older model.

300TD. Mercedes' diesel station wagon, same comments as 300D.

300SD. Mercedes' diesel flagship (?-1980 in older body style, 1981-? in newer style). In the 1980s, the 300SDL and 350SDL were long wheelbase versions of the same model.

300E [1986-1995]. The mid-range Mercedes, a fantastic car in all respects. Fast, powerful, smooth. However, the traditional Mercedes enthusiast may bemoan a more plasticky style, with lighter components and a less firm door slam. When I had mine, though, I loved it. In strict design and drivability terms, probably among the best Mercedes made. It gets about 21mpg, as opposed to the 12-15mpg of the S-class.

300CE [Sometime after 1986 - 1995]. The same as the 300E, but with a gorgeous coupe or convertible body. This is a better looking car than the 300E, and yet it still seats four with reasonable comfort. As with all coupes, you pay in roominess, especially in the back seat. But for the solo driver who loves beauty, it's tough to beat if you want to pay the extra money for looks.

300E 2.6 or 260E. At various times, this car was offered as a less powerful relative of the 300E, using the less powerful 6-cylinder engine from the 190E 2.6. It shares all 300E virtues other than the power. I'm not sure how the performance is relative to the 300E; perhaps some owners might wish to comment.

400E This is a 300E with an 8-cylinder V8 engine. Although I don't have any hard figures, this car should go like crazy with the bigger engine.

500E. A rare collectible car, the 500E was a 300E with the engine from the 560SEL. This car blows away just about any other car on the road, but does it with the discreet invisibility of a true Mercedes. The sharp-eyed will catch the flared wheel wells and know you're driving something special. Final assembly and re-working of the car was done by Porsche. Alas, this car is no longer being made, although there is a rumoured successor coming soon. I found one used at W I Simonson in Santa Monica for $ 55,000 in May 1998.

The successor is, of course, the AMG-based E-Class. I don't know much about it, but expect it to be quite impressive, albiet wildly inappropriate for our tragically speed limited roads.

300D [1986-1995 in many areas]. Same as the 300E, but with a slower but more economical TurboDiesel. This car died temporarily in California due to emissions regulations, but a diesel model is once again available in all states.

E320, E420/E430 [1996 - Present] The new E-class Mercedes was much lauded as a daring and innovative design. The odd bug-eyed headlights and the presence of cupholders (!) were considered significant breakthroughs by the motoring press. They are applauded as being peppier and more fun to drive, but some people complain that the quality feel of the old model has been compromised. You may want to drive one back to back with the old model to see which suits you better.

The photo is of a 1997 model E420. In 1998, this has been replaced by the even faster E430; unfortunately, the new model has apparently faced either overwhelming demand or underwhelming supply, so you'll find it difficult to obtain. (The photo on the top of the page is of the same car.

S Class

The large, luxurious Mercedes represents the automotive state of the art.

The best performers by far are the V8 models. However, they can be serious maintenance problems if they are not well cared for. V6 models are more bulletproof, but you might not be happy with their performance. If you buy a car for performance, stick with a V8, live with the maintenance costs, but be sure you have a good one, and that you can afford to keep it running and happy.

The following pre-1973 models have a nice "vintage" feel, with more wood and more "classic" looking instruments.

280S A 6-cylinder S-class sedan, with a similar body style to the later 280SE models. Carburated engine; carburators apparently a maintenance weak spot. Pricing 1k-4k.

280SE. The fuel injected 6-cylinder engine. From 196? to 1972 on old body style. About the same price as the V8 models, this car is more reliable than the 4.5 V8, but a bit of a slug performance-wise. Continued with newer style through 1980. I believe that in the newer style, this was mainly, if not exclusively, a grey market car. Pricing $ 1k-4k

280SE 4.5. [1972-1973] The S-class body with a 4.5 litre 8-cylinder engine. Has a reputation as a beautiful car, which it is, but maintenance is pricey. Prone to rust. This car has held steady in value for the last few years, at least in California. It may have future collector value as the supply dwindles. Pricing around $ 5k. A SEL version is slightly better equipped and has a longer wheelbase.

300SEL [1969-1972]. Craig Tiano writes as follows about this model:

I believe you may have missed the 300SEL of '69-72. It was the previous high line car (even more luxurious than the 280SEL) with air suspension like the 600 of the same time period. The car came with one of 2 engines: 4.5 litre (yup, the same one they used in the 450SEL's 10 years later!) or the 6.3 litre (same as in the 600). The first 6.3 was built by a MB engineer as a high performance personal car. It worked so well that MB made it a production model. It is an amazing car for it's day: 0-60 times in the low 6 second range, will do over 150mph. Today, the air suspension is a maintenance nightmare. The 6.3's value ranges from nearly nothing (beater cars) to $45k for a pristine low mileage example. An average 6.3 with fully functional mechanics and suspension runs in the $15k range. The 4.5 version seems to top out at $10-12k for pristine cars, and not much less for fully functional daily transportation.

The following post-1973 models have a nice "modern" feel; you could easily confuse the interior of an excellent condition example with that of a brand new car. (I know because I own one). Handling has significantly improved from the earlier models.

300SD. [?-1991]. The diesel S-class model, entry level. In my experience as a 300SD owner, acceleration from about 0-20mph takes forever, and then it builds up and becomes quite quick. This is also a very smooth, plush and elegant car. Remember to change your oil every 3,000 miles on the dot. Unlike the gas models, this model designation remains the same through the next generation of S-class cars, so it has an especially long model life. See the newer S-class remarks for differences between the old and new body style.

450SE, 450SEL. [1973-1980]. The S-class gets a new look and a more rugged, rust-resistant body style. An excellent condition example can look fresh and contemporary even today. You can get them cheap, but they can be a maintence horror if not well cared for. Pricing around $ 2k-6k. (The picture to the left is of my old 450SEL, which served me well for one and a half years before dying of a cracked head :-(. Naturally, this picture was not taken at Fletcher Jones Motorcars, who would no doubt faint before even looking at such a car).

450SEL 6.9. An offshoot of the 450SEL, this car is often just called the '6.9'. According to Craig Tiano, "The 6.9 in proper tune, BTW, can only be described as having "rocket-like performance". The 6.9 still has the distinction of being the 'world's fastest production sedan'. A good 6.9 is now up in the $12-15k range." I've seen them for as little as $ 6k, no doubt in wretched condition. Beware, for any problems will cost silly money to fix. But it is a spectacular car when in first-rate condition.

450SLC This was built on the SL chassis. It's a coupe, not a convertible.

The next-generation S-Class. I believe these are the first cars to have the neat seat-shaped power seat adjusters. The climate control was also changed. Other than that, the cabin is surprisingly similar to the previous generation.

380SEL [1981-1984/5]. Another new look for the S-class. The 380SEL has a reputation for having a troublesome and underpowered engine. Pricing around $ 6-8k.

500SEL [1981?-1984]. The 380SEL with an engine more suitable for the marque, but still more troublesome than the more recent (1985+ models). Air suspension problems may exist in some models. Pricing around $ 6-8k. I believe most of these were grey market.

500SEL [1985-?]. A better engine and no more air suspension make this car significantly more expensive than earlier 500s, around $ 10-12k. I was told to avoid this car in favour of the 560SEL, below

560SEL [1986-1991]. Successor to the 500SEL, with the more powerful engine. $ 11-30k depending on year and mileage. Some of these models have air suspensions, which can be troublesome and expensive to repair.

420SEL [?-1991]. The low-end V8, less powerful than the 560 series but somewhat less expensive, too. As of April 2001, this is the car I currently own. It's not much slower than the 560. Curiously, insurance rates are much lower - I was quoted $1,200 per six months to insure a 1991 560SEL but only $850 for six months for a 1991 420SEL. Since performance really isn't much different, the insurance cost might be a major advantage for this model.

300SEL, 320SEL [?-1991]. The entry-level S-class, with the same 6-cylinder engine as the 300E. With all the weight it has to carry around, unlikely to impress performance-wise.

380SEC, 500SEC, 560SEC. Coupe versions of the S-class sedans. You lose two seats, get a shorter and thus more nimble car, and pay significantly more money.

600SEL, 500SEL, 420SEL, 320SEL. [1991-early 1999] They have (ahem) controversial appearance, sort of like a blown-up 300E. Some amazing features, like the parking guides and the dual air conditioning units (you can keep each side of the car 20degF warmer or cooler than the other). Later renamed S600, S500, S420 and S320.

The 12-cylinder 600SEL is definitely a collector's item, a high-mark in Mercedes history. Present management claims that it will soon be replaced by an 8 of comparable power; apparently the price ($ 128k) and potential maintenance costs caused customers to be somewhat cool to the model.

2001 update: they have changed their mind, and there is now an S600 with the new design.

Even the 320SEL (now renamed S320) is said to have startlingly good performance. I drove it in my 2001 search for a new car and can confirm this; it is quite sprightly. One interesting disadvantage: it marks Mercedes heavy turn to electronics, so your backyard mechanic can no longer keep it running; you have to go to more professional mechanics or your dealer. If you're used (as I am) to someone who can keep repair costs down by scrounging, maintenance on one of these can be a big shock.

The Coupe versions have been renamed CL500 and CL600. For a while, they were labelled S500 and S600, so you could not easily distinguish them from sedans unless you were looking at them from the side. Understandably, owners of these $ 97,000 plus vehicles weren't keen on the lack of differentiation, and this was eventually fixed.

S500, S430. At long last, the 2000 S-Class has emerged. I saw it at the 1999 Auto Show in January and here is a full report with pictures. The performance figures of the 8-cylinder S500 are indeed comparable to the S600's, due to the substantial decrease in weight enjoyed by the new model. Despite this, the new car is said to be even roomier inside than the old version. [2 April 1999]

Car magazine (UK) has given it a most flattering review. The S-Class now returns to its familiar "Best car in the world" status, after a 10-year hiatus with the previous model.

On 13 May 2001, I went to the Mercedes-Benz PowerTrip and actually drove a S430. I must say that it exceeded my already high expectations - I was extremely impressed by how well it drove, even compared to my just-bought 1991 420SEL. An awesome car for sure. See my link for the full report.

SL Class

Smooth, safe, sporty - and with one of the highest resale values of any car. Except for the gullwing, all these cars are convertibles.

300SL Gullwing. [1950s] Very rare. Paralyzingly expensive ($ 300-500k). Known as one of the best cars ever built.

230SL/250SL/280SL. Predecessors to the 450SL. According to Craig Tiano, they "were basically the same car, but with ever increasing displacement. The 280SL is fuel injected, so tends to be more reliable and significantly more expensive. Many say that the 280SL was the last true "sports" SL. Most 230SL's are manual transmissions, BTW."

450SL, 380SL, 500SL, 560SL This car has one of the longest production runs in history, from the early 1970s to 1990. When it exited stage right, it was still generating healthy profits for the company. Resale value is stratospheric; even clapped-out models go for $ 6k or so. Early 450SLs arrived from Europe with 350SL badges, and many users never replaced them. So your '350SL' is likely to be a '450SL' in reality. (Thanks to Craig Tiano for this information).

600SL, 500SL, 300SL, 320SL [1991-2002]. Buy a 500SL. You won't regret it, despite its stratospheric price tag. I've seen a used 500SL for as little as $ 35k (June 1998). The 600SL is said, oddly enough, to be only slightly faster than the 500 and not that much fun to drive. The 300SL is a bit slow; get the larger engine if you possibly can. This car was a technological tour de force, lauded by just about everyone who's seen it. A bona-fide hit for MB. List on the now renamed SL500 was reduced to $ 79,000 for the 1998 model year, and the somewhat sluggish 6-cylinder models have been dropped. Hopefully (from the buyers' perspective), this will cause used SL prices to drop.

500SL [2003]. A few of these have appeared as a 2003 model year car. Car magazine (UK) has posted a very flattering review of the vehicle, including their rarely given 5-star rating ("Drive before you die").

I have already seen a couple of them around the streets of LA. A very impressive looking car, but easy to confuse with the CL500, since both now have a hard top. I wonder if there's much point to the CL500 given the new model's performance and hard top.

This is said to be a much better car to drive than the old SL, and Car magazine claims quality is back up there, after slipping with the new S-class and some of the cheaper models.

SLK [1997-]. This is a brand new car, said by many to be far in flair to the traditional SL, at a price that definitely puts the SL to shame. Unfortunately, they appear to be extremely difficult to find. At $ 38,000 list, only 5,000 of them were cautiously released into the US market, so it's a seller's market, much like the Mazda Miata craze. I haven't seen any in the dealers, but I did see one on the road. (On Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, naturally). The cool feature is the automatically retractable hardtop, the advantages of a solid coupe and a wind in the hair convertible seamlessly combined. Although the engine's has just four cylinders, it's supercharged and performance is said to be great, with 0-60 coming up in a little over seven seconds. Curiously enough, the American Car & Driver magazine tested the SLK, the new Boxer and the BMW 6-cyl roadster. They rated the BMW first, Porsche second and SLK third. Car magazine of the UK, normally not a real fan of Mercedes, ranked the Mercedes first, Porsche second and BMW third. That shows how closely matched these cars are; you probably want to choose which one you want based more on your personality than the merits of the cars themselves. According to Car magazine, a 6-cylinder SLK is coming soon.

Special Cars

600, 1965-1980. A little dear for most of us. Craig Tiano says:

The 600 of 1965-1980 is another model I think you may have missed. This was the flagship car. Available in "standard length" (also called short wheelbase or SWB) or "limo length" (also called 6 door or LWB), the car weighs in OVER 6000 pounds without passengers. Hydraulic door openers, air suspension, dual air conditioning, leather interior, no holds barred luxury. Engine is the 6.3 litre, with only reasonable performance due to the weight of the car. Rarely do these trade hands. "Nice" cars go for $30-40k, and at least one I have seen has an asking price of $140k, which the owner will undoubtably get since the car is 100 points and only 15k miles.

The 2009 New York Auto Show is almost upon us and the news is starting to trickle in about what we can expect to see next week. Mercedes is going to unveil the E63 AMG version of the all-new E-Class.

The 2010 E63 AMG is powered by a 6.3L V8 that puts out 518 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch Speedshift transmission. The E63 AMG reaches 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited).

Mercedes-Benz CL to be Renamed S-Class Coupe in 2011

Just as the CLK has officially been renamed the E-Class coupe, Mercedes is also going to rename the revised CL the S-Class coupe when it launches for the 2011 model year.

The S-Class coupe will feature a facelifted front fascia with a more upright grille and LED headlights. Outback there will be new LED taillights and a new bumper design.

Kicherer, Mercedes-Benz vehicle tuning specialist, has unveiled the first details of its new tuning package for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class even before the car hits the street.

The Kicherer tuning package for the E-Class is based on the new E-Class AMG sports package. The appearance kit features carbon fiber front and rear spoiler, new side skirts, new side mirror covers and 20-inch forged-alloy wheels.

The Kicherer Mercedes-Benz E-Class also comes with a new quad tailpipes performance exhaust system and a new suspension system.

The GTK project has been in the making for three years, now Kleemann has finally announced the official specs and background story to this brand new supercar.

The Kleemann GTK is based on the Mercedes SLK and uses a SLK 55 AMG lump. However, thanks to the addition of a complete Kleemann Kompressor system, the car pumps out 540bhp and 516lb ft of torque.

A seven-speed automatic transmission delivers the power to the road, top speed is limited to 186mph, with a 0-62mph time of around 3.7secs.

If you've ever been a passenger on a car journey trying to surf the internet on your mobile, you'll know just how far removed the information highway is from the Queen's Highway. Now the automotive industry are trying to get a grip on the problem. Mercedes-Benz are claiming some degree of success with their web-based infotainment system myCommand. The concept behind the infostation currently being tested in the E-Class is the updating and maintenance of all data and functions via the internet.

In order to increase transmission speeds, the boffins in Stuttgart have got together with their opposite numbers at Nokia to develop fourth-generation radio technology referred to as LTE (Long Term Evolution) and capable of bandwidths of between 5 and 25 Mbps. This would be sufficient for the high-quality streaming of video material. Following extensive trials, the Daimler engineers have now reported excellent progress. At least as far as their remit is concerned: navigation, radio, telephony and additional services all functioned very smoothly. The missing component is Europe-wide availability of LTE, and that could take several years to put in place.

Mercedes-Benz Introduces New SPLITVIEW COMAND Display For The S-Class

Mercedes has announced today that starting in the summer of 2009, S-Class models will feature a new technology they're calling SPLITVIEW. Developed in collaboration with Bosch, SPLITVIEW will allow both the driver and passenger to view two separate programs via the same COMAND display. For example, let's say the vehicle's operator is in the process of viewing navigation directions, the front passenger can simultaneously watch a film on the exact same 8-inch display.

You may be wondering what magic lies behind the SPLITVIEW system, and the answer lies in pixel placement. The COMAND screen shows two different images simultaneously by placing pixels adjacent to one another, after which a filter masking the display divides this mixed image so that depending on seating position, either one image or the other can be seen. As with current S-Class models, the driver has access to the full suite of COMAND functions, while the passenger uses a separate remote control to choose either a DVD, TV channel or music video to watch (all of which can be used in conjunction with headphones, should the passenger desire).

As already noted, the SPLITVIEW system will make its debut next summer, found on the S-Class sedan lineup.

Completely redesigned for 2010, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class now comes as a two-door coupe as well as the sedan. This review focuses on the coupe, which shares the sedan's model name but is nonetheless a smaller car. See the two compared here, along with the 2009 Mercedes CLK-Class, a similarly priced coupe that the E-Class replaces.

Typical of Mercedes, the E-Class coupe is both pricey and lean on standard features. The V-8-powered E550 I tested has its charms, but it also has its quirks, and its capabilities on the road suggest that this comfortable, stylish coupe is best realized as the E350, which has a V-6 engine.

Exterior & Styling

With the 2010 E-Class, Mercedes eliminates not one but two of its most outdated designs. The CLK-Class remained through 2009 as an awkward adaptation of the earlier and more conservative C-Class, whose 2008 redesign introduced Mercedes' new, edgier design direction. Likewise, the outgoing E-Class, which made a respectable splash upon its 2003 redesign, had come to look plainer than anything in its price class.

The 2010 model year changes that, with dramatic headlights, sculpted front bumpers and prodigiously creased hoods and bodysides. The coupe is the more daring of the two, with more pronounced fender haunches and a smaller grille dominated by the Mercedes symbol, similar to Sport versions of the C-Class. Because it was the higher, E550 trim level, my test coupe also had a deeper front bumper and side skirts.

I didn't see it at first, but after a few days with my test car -- and no shortage of positive reactions from observers -- I grew to appreciate the car's styling and its eager, forward-leaning stance.

Unbridled Power

It takes less than a few days -- more like a few seconds -- to learn that the V-8-powered E550 can lean forward with the best of them. A healthy 382 horsepower propels the coupe to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds, and if the power doesn't coax you into planting your right foot, the exhaust note will. As you'd expect from a luxury car, you don't hear the engine most of the time; it doesn't need to work very hard during normal acceleration and cruising, so it's all but silent in those conditions.

It should go without saying that the V-8's power is unnecessary. Being a luxury car, even the E350's lesser engine -- a 268-hp V-6 -- provides healthy acceleration of zero to 60 mph in about 6 seconds. Beyond the practical issues of a lower base price ($48,050 versus $54,650) and better mileage (a 2 mpg overall advantage), there's another argument for the E350: The rest of the E550 doesn't live up to its powerful V-8.

Yes, the brakes seem up to the task, but the rear wheels can't always get the V-8's robust 391 pounds-feet of torque to the ground without setting off the electronic stability system. Unlike the sedan, the E550 coupe has no all-wheel-drive option. More important, though, is that the handling is merely capable, not inspiring. Push the E550 hard into corners, and it typically holds on and behaves, but you don't get the involvement and controllability you would in a BMW 3 Series, which is, though technically a C-Class competitor, comparable in terms of interior space.

Like the C-Class, the E's steering improves on the numb performance of earlier models, but I expect more sportiness from a rear-wheel-drive car. My coupe lacked the feedback of a front-drive Audi A5, much less a BMW. Some shoppers might not demand sportiness, but it bears noting because everything from the two-door styling to the console shifter -- in place of the sedan's column gear selector -- promises sport.

Comfort Over Sport

The E550 excels in comfort, with a smooth ride and a quiet cabin. It also has a Sport button on the dashboard that's ostensibly for sportier performance -- as if it could magically transform the car into a track star. What it does in the E550 is transform a previously comfortable car into a rough-riding one with a twitchier accelerator and a transmission that's less interested in upshifting. Mercedes is by no means alone in this practice; I'd like all automakers to put the emphasis on actual performance rather than effects you can easily demonstrate.

Even if you like the results, it would be better if the adaptive suspension, transmission and throttle were divorced from each other rather than ganged together into a single, all-powerful Sport button. (The E350 has no Dynamic Handling Suspension, so its Sport button has no effect on the ride.) Even if the changes in ride quality weren't so severe, I'd still like to be able to liven up the transmission -- maybe take off in 1st rather than 2nd gear on occasion -- without feeling a road that's better left unfelt.

As for the throttle progression, I think a car's accelerator should respond consistently regardless of mode (except in off-road vehicles), but I seem to be alone in this crusade. To that end, the pedal may be slow to respond when you first pop the transmission into gear. Say you're doing a three-point midblock turn and shift from Drive into Reverse, and the car doesn't go when you hit the gas. The natural reaction is to step harder -- then the throttle finally kicks in and you're flying toward the parked cars behind you. Again, this isn't a problem that's unique to Mercedes, but it's annoying at best, and it stood out in the E550.

Mercedes-Benz CL500

Launched at a time that many regard as the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz build quality, the Type 140 S-Class wasn't universally liked.

While it was an engineering masterpiece at launch, many regarded it as too big and Germanic for its own good. The Coupe version appeared in 1992 with styling that could at best be described as uncomfortable. It took allmost a decade for the C140 to "mature", looking more elegant now than ever.

There are a number of modern cars that claim to be "coupes" but this is the real deal. The side windows retract into the body work completely, with no pillars spoiling the effect. This provides pleasant wind in the hair motoring, with no leaking convertible roofs and a much safer fixed structure overhead. There is also a tilt and slide sunroof.

Even at 12 years, the interior is among the most comfortable to be found in any car, with decadent luxury the order of the day. The interior is trimmed in two-tone grey Exclusive Nappa leather which is soft and inviting. Even the dash and door cappings are trimmed in leather. The rest is tastefully genuine Burr Walnut veneer, chrome and deep pile carpet. Even the headlining is luxurious Alcantara suede that just adds to that feeling of wellbeing.

Everything is electronically adjustable and the cabin feels almost bulletproof. The side windows are double glazed, ensuring whisper levels of NVH, and the interior is roomy enough for four adults to be relatively comfortable.

Rear legroom is at a slight premium considering the size of the car, but this is two door remember! Both doors and the bootlid feature pneumatic closing aids that pull them shut over the last couple of millimetres.

There is electronic climate control with a carbon filter for filtering out bad smells and dust and the like, and even a car telephone! The 12-speaker custom Bose sound system was specifically designed with the acoustics of the interior in mind, ensuring amazing sound quality and clarity.

Suspending all this lavishness is the same suspension as found in the W140 S500 saloon. This means comfortable handling, the car seemingly shrinking in size with familiarity, making placing the car on the road rather easy. The ride is set up for comfort in mind, with enthusiastic cornering rewarded with lots of grip but also lots of predictable understeer. Somehow this doesn't bother you at all, as you relax, your pulse rate slows, and you start to soak up the scenery and the beautifully trimmed interior.

The 5l V8 engine is mated to an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission, ensuring smooth progress indeed! Credited with 235kW and 470Nm, performance is effortless. The smooth power delivery is actually quite addictive, with the big engine making a mockery of the car's weight (mass is more than two tonne)!

Cruising at the national limit, the engine turns around at roughly 2 100 r/min. This, together with efficient engine technology, ensures cruising economy in the 10.5 to 11l/100km region. In town, expect to get between 17 and 20l/100km. Ouch!!

All in all, satisfaction actually does remain long after the price has been forgotten with this old Merc!

Mercedes Benz S Class Dominate Luxury Segment

Mercedes Benz is doing well. The new E-class launched in Germany on the 10th of June has already taken 30,000 orders and the list is growing and growing. However in Australia, BMW tend to dominate the sub $100,000 segment for luxury cars with their BMW 3 / 5 Series. However when you start pushing past the $100,000 mark and you start looking at the BMW 7 Series and the Meredes Benz S Class, the Audi A8 and such, Mercedes assures dominance. Admitedly the S class reaches far above $100,000 and can go all the way to almost $300,000 with extras.

Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG lands in Australia

Mercedes-Benz is fast-tracking its eagerly anticipated E 63 AMG sedan to Australia following its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Australia has exclusively been able to stipulate a specification to suit our requirements with our E 63 AMG’s fitted as standard with rear boot lip spoiler, sun protection pack and 19-inch alloy wheels – all of which are usually on the options list.

The E 63 AMG is powered by a 6.3-litre V8 engine which develops 386kW of power with a maximum torque figure of 630Nm.

Coupled to an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission the E 63 AMG does standstill to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

Riding on AMG Ride Control sports suspension the E 63 AMG offers three driver selectable settings – Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus – at the touch of a button.

Our images show a new Mercedes-Benz CLS that has adopted a bolder and more aggressive look - perhaps a coup to its position among growing competition in the market for sedans designed to look like coupes.

Several manufacturers are now presenting or finalising their own sports sedans - including Aston Martin's Rapide, Porsche's new Panamera, and Audi's upcoming A7 - this segment of the automotive market seems to be expanding despite a growing emphasis on more environmentally friendly cars.

Mercedes-Benz pioneered this relatively small niche with the release of the original CLS in 2004, and Mercedes-Benz Australia say customers that buy a CLS buy it for a particular reason.

Mercedes has officially unveiled the facelifted 2010 Mercedes S-Class less than 24 hours after we first published pictures from a leaked brochure.

From the front the facelifted model boasts a more pronounced grille, a revised bumper with chrome inserts in the air intakes, as well as LED daytime driving lights, indicators and marker lights for the S 400 HYBRID and S 600 (They are part of a package on the other S-Class models). Out back the changes are less noticeable as the only modifications are the addition of new LED taillights and a revised exhaust system that is integrated into the rear bumper.

Despite the minor makeover, the big news is the launch of the S 400 HYBRID which boasts a fuel economy rating of 7.9L/100km and emits just 186 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Set to become the world’s first production vehicle to combine a hybrid powertrain with a lithium-ion battery, the S 400 HYBRID uses a 3.5-liter petrol engine that produces 205 kW (279 hp) and an electric motor that cranks out 15 kW (20 hp).

On request there is also a new Media Interface, which can connect an external music device with the off-roader's onboard electronics and control system, enabling music tracks to be shown in the instrument cluster and the colour display in the centre console, and conveniently accessed using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel. At the same time, the audio device's battery is also charged.

There is a choice of three units, all of them with a colour display, a twin tuner for improved radio reception, speed-sensitive volume control, a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies and a Bluetooth interface which enables a mobile phone to be wirelessly linked to the hands-free system. Along with the new telematics generation, Mercedes-Benz also is now also offering enhanced LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system as an optional extra in the M‑Class for the first time.

The occupants are also able to enjoy a surround-sound experience of concert hall quality with the latest generation of the optional Harman Kardon® Logic7® sound system, which delivers exceptionally crystal-clear listening pleasure thanks to its output of 610 watts and digital signal processor (DSP).

Rear-seat passengers also have the option of a new entertainment system with two large 8-inch screens, a centrally integrated DVD player, two sets of wireless headphones for greater freedom of movement as well as two remote controls.

Unrivalled safety features as standard

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has always set the benchmark in terms of safety in the SUV segment. In future it will also come as standard with the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® and NECK-PRO head restraints.

Fuel consumption reduced by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is powered by powerful yet economical V6 and V8 petrol or diesel engines, which are now even more fuel-efficient. The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive delivers outstanding performance both on and off-road. And the standard-fit 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with optimised shift characteristics translates the power from the engines into refined dynamism.

Five units are available in the new-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class ranging from 140 to 285 kW (190 to 388 hp). The engineers' meticulous attention to detail has reduced fuel consumption by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres compared with the outgoing models. Moreover, the most powerful engine developing 375 kW/510 hp is available in the guise of the ML 63 AMG 4MATIC.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class is the first premium compact SUV from this German manufacturer. This 4-door wagon shares its platform with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class premium compact car. A single GLK350 trim level is available with rear-wheel drive or the company's 4Matic all-wheel drive. The lone engine is a 268-hp 3.5-liter V6 that is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class wear standard 19-inch wheels and tires, and 20-inch versions are included as part of the optional appearance package. Available features include a navigation system that comes with a hard drive for storing digital music files, bi-xenon headlamps, and a panoramic sunroof. This evaluation is based on preview test drives.

Mercedes is showing off its updated 2010 GL-Class SUV for the first time at the New York motorshow. On the outside, the seven-seater SUV's looks have been refreshed with new bumpers, new chrome underguards at the front and rear, restyled chrome tailpipes, a new-look grille and a new pairing of the fog lamps and daytime running lights linked with chrome inserts. The exterior updates are rounded off with newly designed 18 to 21-inch alloy wheels.

Inside there's new instrumentation and a restyled multifunction steering wheel in nappa leather as well as crash-responsive NECK-PRO luxury head restraints for the driver and front passenger.

Another new feature of the facelifted GL-Class is the Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring system, which checks the individual pressures of all four tires and provides the driver with a graphic read-out.

Wondering what the interior of the forthcoming 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class looks like? Wonder no more. The industrious spy photographer of Auto Express recently captured an undisguised view of the new model's interior, revealing precisely what to expect in terms of ergonomics and styling.

Although I won't go into too many details, due to the fact the photo pretty much speaks for itself, two highlights worth noticing include a large multimedia display screen positioned atop the center console (à la the S-Class) and the COMAND controller in the center console (à la the S-Class and C-Class). If you had to describe it, an amalgamation of the S-Class and C-Class interiors would probably best summarize the E-Class exterior as a whole.

If you're interested in seeing the outside of the new model, Auto Express also grabbed a number of shots showcasing the new E-Class exterior (two of which are below). The photos again show in fairly clear detail the front end and side contours, as well as well-masked LED tail lights.

Mercedes-Benz CLS Class
With the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS, the German automaker succeeds with an unusual formula. They call the CLS a "four-door coupe"-a notion that seemed odd a few years ago when it was introduced. And yet today, the Benz CLS has inspired a raft of similar vehicles from automakers around the world, with its slimmed-down side view and its faintly French interior.

In retrospect, the "coupe" designation seems a little more acceptable; though it still has four doors, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS' profile is taut and elegant like a fine coupe. Last year's face-lift subtly improved the car's visage with a more dramatic two-bar grille and a slightly trimmed nose, along with LED tail lamps. Years after its launch, the CLS' silhouette still is quite fetching. The sheetmetal gives way to even more elegance inside, where the front seats are surrounded by veneered dash, doors, and console. Last year, the CLS adopted a new steering wheel and white-faced instruments, minor styling cues that didn't interrupt its antithetically Benz beauty.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS returns with two models. A standard CLS 550 is plenty urgent thanks to a 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 engine. The performance CLS63 AMG version amps up the numbers with an AMG-penned 6.2-liter V-8, a muscular 507 hp, and 465 lb-ft of torque. Both pour on power in seamless streams, with the AMG barking out a more guttural tone when it hits a 100-mph stride. In either trim, the CLS is no fuel sipper. Even though it's mated to a slick-shifting seven-speed automatic, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS 550 musters just 14/21 mpg. The five-speed automatic-equipped AMG edition drops even lower, to 14/19 mpg. In the CLS 550, power shuttles to the rear wheels, and ride motions are controlled by an air suspension that leaves something to be desired, dynamically. The well-balanced rear-drive chassis wants to be firmer, and the steering needs to be a little quicker to please traditional German car fans. If they opt up to the AMG edition, those handling problems are solved; the top version has firm but supple ride and steering feel, without much of a sacrifice in ride quality. In all, there's an appealing, luxuriant feel to the CLS that's the opposite of the taut, tightly drawn handling of a BMW 5-Series-or Mercedes' own E-Class, for example.

High style incurs some sacrifice with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS, particularly in the backseat. The tapered roofline cuts marginally into headroom in the front, much more so in the back. Heated and ventilated front seats pocket passengers deeply behind a tall dash that cuts down on visibility straight ahead. Looking back, the thick rear pillars obscure rear views. There are twin bucket seats in the back, and they're very cozy-but headroom is at a premium and the CLS' shape draws the roof and windows in close to rear-seat passengers, which could feel claustrophobic to some.

Neither NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) nor the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has crash-tested a CLS-Class Mercedes. Both versions are outfitted with dual front, side, and curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction and stability control; and a Pre-Safe collision preparation system that tightens seatbelts when sensors indicate an imminent accident.

The luxuriously trimmed 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS also comes with a lengthy list of standard features. Satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, a Harman/Kardon audio system, and an iPod interface are included on each CLS, along with such options as adaptive cruise control and a set of sensors to assist with parking.

Mercedes-Benz CL-Class AMG Sports

For the first time, there is an AMG Sports package for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the CL-Class. With revamped AMG bodystyling, attractive 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels and special interior details, both top Mercedes-Benz models can now be made more striking than ever in terms of sportiness. The appealing combination of exclusive equipment features, many of which are not available separately, is proving increasingly popular with customers. The AMG Sports package is now available for five Mercedes model types.

New AMG bodystyling, including a front apron with large air intakes, enhances the visual impact of the S-Class and the CL-Class. The rear apron with a striking black insert and integrated, rectangular tailpipe trim in polished stainless steel is also eye-catching. AMG side sill panels round off the AMG bodystyling. 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with a five-spoke design and wide-base 255/40 (front) and 275/40 (rear) tyres fill the wheel arches perfectly and provide optimum contact with the road. 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels are available as an option in a twin-spoke design with 255/35 and 275/35 tyres. Mounted on the front axle there are perforated brake discs and silver-painted brake callipers featuring Mercedes-Benz lettering; the V6 models have a more generously proportioned braking system.

Wood trim and the wood/leather steering wheel in black ash give the high-quality vehicle interior a dynamic feel. The AMG Sports package also includes velour floor mats with AMG lettering and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs.

The AMG Sports package is available for all S-Class models with a short or long wheelbase, as well as for the CL 500 and CL 500 4MATIC. It costs between 5831 and 7973 euros (including 19% VAT); the market launch commences in June 2009. In addition to the S-Class and CL-Class, the E-Class Saloon, the E-Class Coupé and the C-Class can be equipped with the AMG Sports package.

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is available with some new features and option packages. Four models continue in this lineup. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300 Luxury and C300 Sport have a 228-hp 3.0-liter V6. The C350 Sport has a 268-hp 3.5-liter V6. The C63 AMG is tuned by Mercedes' performance division and has a 451-hp 6.2-liter V8. C300 Sport is available with manual or automatic transmission. All other 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class cars use a 7-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all models. The C300 is also available with Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive. All 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300 models can run on ethanol-blended E85 fuel. Sport models have a sport suspension and unique interior and exterior styling. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front and rear side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Newly standard are front hip-protecting side airbags. Available features include a navigation system which includes a hard drive for storing digital music files, bi-xenon headlamps, and 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Newly available on the 2010 Mercedes-Benz C-Class are keyless entry/engine start and rearview camera. Also available on rear-drive Sport models is a Dynamic Handling Package, which includes active suspension, specific 18-inch wheels, and steering-wheel shift paddles on cars with the automatic transmission.

Mercedes Reports 32.1% Drop in U.S.

December proved to be a poor month for Mercedes-Benz that reported U.S. sales of 18,507 vehicles, a 32.1 percent decrease over the same month last year. The German automaker's total 2008 volume was 225,128 units, an 11.2 percent decline compared to 2007. Sales of the firm's C-Class model line rose 13.8 percent for the year while sales of the M-Class SUV line-up increased by 1.3 percent. Merc's Smart car unit that made its debut in the U.S. market in 2008, recorded 2,341 sales in December while the company's year-to-date sales came up to a total of 24,622 units.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Leaked Brochure

In about a week's time, Mercedes plans to lift the wraps on its next-generation E-Class. However, thanks to an internal leak in December when three exterior photos found their way into the internet and a new leakage that occurred today and concerns the official German market brochure, there won't be much to talk about when Merc unveils the 2010 E-Class, known internally under the codename W212. Aside from the new exterior pictures, the brochure scans reveal the executive sedan's squared-shapes interior as well as the E-Class' full engine line-up and dimensions.

Following in the footsteps of the C-Class and more recently the GLK, the new E-Class exterior gets taut body surfacing and angular design elements such as the four diamond shape headlamps up front. Same goes for the interior, though in a less tacky way than the GLK's cabin which looks like it was built from bricks. Apparently, Merc's designers are trying -we not saying that that they succeeded- to evoke the robustness of the mid 1980s E-Class.

Official images of the forthcoming 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class have been leaked onto the internet ahead of the luxury sedan's planned debut in 2009. Known internally by its W212 chassis moniker, the new mid-size executive sedan from Mercedes-Benz adopts a more angular styling which tries to evoke the robustness of the mid-1980s - early-1990s E-Class range. Judging by these photos, we reckon that Merc's designers did it in a much less classy way, but we'll have to wait to see the sedan in real life for a safer verdict.
